Wonderfully Made

Living in the Now Newsletter
April 27, 2023

We humans are wonderfully made. Research indicates at least one genetic intervention has occurred in our history with earth. There is evidence that two chromosomes were fused together to make the current chromosome #2. The telomeres that are normally found only at both ends of chromosomes are also found in the middle of this one. There is evidence of other alterations. These appear to have occurred about 200,000 years ago with no majors change since.
In the 1990s, the human the genome mapping project began. The results have given rise to some controversy. Prior to this project, it was thought that there was a gene for every protein naturally occurring in the body. However, this project showed at one point that while there are over 400,000 proteins produced by humans, there are only around 24,000 genes. As of April 17, 2023, it has been estimated there are 2,000,000 proteins coded for by 20 - 25,000 genes. It is also estimated that human cells contain 42,000,000 protein molecules per cell [Jan. 2018] with 50 - 100 trillion cells per body.
This finding on the relationship between genes and proteins indicates that we control the output of our genes. This has given rise to the study of epigenetics in the last 20 years. Our genetic expression [however contrary to popular belief] is influenced by our environment which is under our direct control. We decide what our bodies ingest and the circumstances that we live in. We chose our reactions and conditions. We are limited only by our ability to see and imagine the possibilities.
Our chromosomes are protected by telomeres on both ends. As we experience life, replacing cells as they wear out, the number of telomeres gradually declines, eventually reaching a point where the cells no longer replicate themselves.
What affects our telomeres? Mainly stress, exercise, sleep and diet. Duration and intensity of stress, as well as lack of sleep adversely affects the body including telomeres. Aerobic endurance and internal training exercise, as well the best possible proper diet improves overall body functioning including that of the telomeres. Herbs and plants are particularly beneficial.
There is also an enzyme that reverses telomere decline. Telomerase not only increases the number of telomeres but may result in a reversal of the appearance of aging.
This is only one example of the complexity, adaptability and resiliency of the human body.
The discovery that the heart has its own brain cells, as well as the ability to enjoy heart-brain coherence is yet another indicator of the wonder of the human creation we manage.
Heart-brain coherence occurs, with the help of our breath, for example, when our brain and heart become unified at 0.1 Hz frequency. Our mind, body, and spirit become physically one. This harmony allows us to be more present and aware. When in a state of coherence, our body can heal itself and function at an optimal level.
